Memorial Day is an important day for students to remember because they need to know that there are people out there who are willing to die to provide us with freedom. These people are not only in the military but all people who protect us, police, firefighters, and rescue workers are just as important.
I have been talking to my students about all these important people and relating it to 911, since that is something they are familiar with. I have also read them the book "A Patriotic Alphabet Book", then we went to YouTube and searched for the song Yankee Doodle. They enjoyed this. I did this because I didn't want them to only remember Memorial Day as death, even though that is what it is about.
What a great way to teach a serious subject that may be over some six year olds heads!
ReplyDeleteThat's a good way to incorporate Memorial Day into the class setting. I haven't incorporated it into my class yet. I guess since my son is in the military, it means alot more to me now. Before, it was just a holiday I was thankful that we didn't have to go to school and I could see the light at the end of the tunnel (school being out). There is so much more we need to be thankful for on this day.
ReplyDeleteIf we are to preserve freedom, it must be taught in the classroom. Children must know that the cost of freedom is great and that most generation will be called to defend our freedom in some way.
ReplyDeleteThat is very important for students to be able to relate and understand what they hear and read. Was it amazing to see how many students still did not know what Memorial Day meant? We are the main teachers in children lives so why not teach them the basic things to succeed. They need to know about holidays and how they came to be.
